What is Generative Engine Optimization?
A plain-English reference for the vocabulary of AI search — GEO, AEO, llms.txt, AI Overviews, the crawlers that read your site, and the signals models actually weight. Bookmark it; link it; quote it.
Generative Engine Optimization
GEOThe discipline of getting content cited, paraphrased, and summarized by AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. GEO extends traditional SEO beyond blue-link ranking to include how models choose which sources to quote.
Think of SEO as competing for page-one listings and GEO as competing for the answer itself. The two overlap in technical hygiene but diverge sharply on content structure, authority signals, and citability.
Answer Engine Optimization
AEOA near-synonym for GEO, favored when the emphasis is on direct-answer surfaces (featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews) rather than on generative chat responses. In practice most teams use GEO and AEO interchangeably.
If the channel is ChatGPT/Perplexity/Claude, say GEO. If the channel is an answer box or AI Overview embedded in a SERP, say AEO. Juma's audit covers both.
llms.txt
A proposed text file served at /llms.txt that tells large language models which pages on your site are safe and canonical to ingest. Think of it as robots.txt for AI, with a shape closer to a table of contents than a disallow list.

AI Overviews
Google's generative answer surface — the summary that appears above the blue links on AI-eligible queries. Historically called SGE (Search Generative Experience).

GPTBot
OpenAI's web crawler, used to refresh the context that ChatGPT browses with and to train future models. Blocked in robots.txt, your site will not appear in ChatGPT's citations.
PerplexityBot
Perplexity's crawler. Perplexity is citation-first by design — almost every answer links to sources — so PerplexityBot access is unusually high-leverage for a GEO strategy.
ClaudeBot
Anthropic's crawler for Claude. Similar behavior to GPTBot — used to build and refresh the model's retrieval index.
Google-Extended
Google's opt-out control for generative products. Disallowing Google-Extended blocks your content from training Gemini and appearing in AI Overviews without affecting classic Google Search rankings.
ChatGPT-User
The user-agent ChatGPT sends when a ChatGPT user asks the model to browse your page live (as opposed to offline training). Blocking it removes you from real-time ChatGPT citations.
Citability
How readily an AI model can pull a coherent, stand-alone answer from your page. Driven by heading hierarchy, answer-first openings, lists, tables, FAQs, and sufficient depth.
In the Juma rubric, Citability carries the single largest weight (25%) because it's the most actionable lever for content teams.
Answer-first pattern
Writing the first paragraph of a page as a complete, standalone answer to the page's primary question — so an LLM quoting just that paragraph still gets the right information.

E-E-A-T
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness — Google's framework for quality content. Most AI engines apply a similar lens to source selection.

JSON-LD
The JSON-based Schema.org format for embedding structured data in a page. LLMs and search crawlers parse it to resolve entities, authorship, FAQs, products, and more.
